Couch To 5K: My Fitness Goal For 2012

Yes, I do realize we are almost half way through the year, and I am just now setting a fitness goal…

Okay, so I have talked about it before and I will say it again, only this is the LAST time!!! I want to run. Not because I love running, but because I hate it! I want to force myself to do something that I don’t enjoy doing.

Why do I want to run, if I hate doing it?

Maybe I’m cRAzY…

No really (I know I’m crazy), I want to run because:

- I can do it anywhere

- The kids can do it

- It adds personality to my social media profiles (only partly kidding)

- It keeps me from being the lazy bum I have been for the past 28 years.

I want to be more disciplined. I don’t want to lose weight, so I have no weight loss goals. I do want to be a good steward of my body, and teach my kids that a) working out is a habit they need to start now b) we can do hard things even when we hate don’t like them c) hard work and dedication produces rewards.

So my plan is to purchase a double stroller, some sweet running shoes, and start The Couch to 5K plan.

Do you have suggestions for strollers, shoes, or any other gear we may find helpful? Link it up here, I would love to check it out. Have you done this plan or do you have any inspirational running stories to keep us motivated? I would love to read them so please leave em in the comments section.

Hi — I came across your blog/post. I have been tryig to motivate myself to do the couch to 5k program – I have a little one he’s 17 months and I already have a jogging stroller. I just have no motivation to get out and do it. How has the program working for you while having the kids involved?

I will be starting next week, and I have four kids so it should be interesting lol. I will let you know how it goes once I start. I plan to start the program with my older kids while the younger ones ride and I may even let my older ones ride their bikes every other day. Have you run before, or do you hate running as well?

I actually use to be active in the past. I played a number of sports growing up, I played roller derby in my mid-20′s. I’m 30 now and I have the desire, but lack the drive. My family has been going through alot in the past year on every level imaginable. Maybe I can write to you privately. No, I don’t love running, I more so enjoy jogging, I guess you could say? I have everything I could possibly need to do it, I just need the physical push.

  2. Knowing “how” you run will help you find the best kind of shoes. Do you pronate, need stability, or just lightweight shoes? I suggest checking out Runner’s World’s website. They have recommendations for the best shoes and gear.

My suggestion is no matter how much you dislike it to begin with, never give up…because it can take awhile to transition from the “ewwww” part to the “this is awesome!” part. I use my running time to remind myself of everything I am thankful for. Inspirational story here: http:/shewearsmanyhats.com/2012/02/thankful-to-run

    Good luck!
