How To Get Lipstick Out Of Carpet

Yesterday my daughter smeared Lipstick in the Carpet when she was supposed to be napping. I couldn’t even bring myself to clean it while it was fresh (mistake #1) because I was so upset. Not only did she ruin the boys bedroom carpet, she also destroyed my lipstick, blush, eyeliner, and my makeup brushes. Toddlers are notorious for pulling this crap, and this is not the first time this has happened. When my boys were toddlers John poured out every container of my expensive Bare Minerals make up, but at least most of it made it into the toilet.

Anyway, after I got over the anger of her destroying what I had left of a make-up collection I decided I would tackle the job today. I think it went pretty well. I worked on the stain for about 1 hour, and am happy with the results, but I will be steam cleaning the carpets today in hopes of getting rid of the new pink tone of the carpet.

Here are the basic steps I took to get Lipstick out of the Carpet:

- Scrape with a butter knife to loosen up the carpet fibers and scrape away any excess lipstick. Then vacuum the carpet.

- Spray with Goo Gone and let sit for 3-5 minutes. The packaging says to dab with a paper towel, but I used a bath towel and dabbed then rubbed vigorously.Afterwards I vacuumed the carpet.

- After doing the above step twice I mixed vinegar and Dawn dish-liquid, and wet the area. I scrubbed it again with a towel, and let it dry. Then I vacuumed it.

- For the final step I used the Goo Gone again and scrubbed away anything else I could get to come up.

Like I said, I am not happy with the final picture so I will be steam cleaning the carpet to try to get the remaining lipstick up. If I would have cleaned it when it happened, I would probably see no signs of the lipstick!

Do you have any tips for getting Lipstick out of carpet? I would love to hear them!

  1. I used Mean Green….just sprayed it on and let it sit for about a minute. Then used my Little Green Machine filled with hot water and a little bit of Tide. Came right up!

  2. I didn’t have the products above, so i used Goof Off (small metal can with a nozzel on top like lighter fluid, it smells like paint thinner) and a towel and scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed until all I had was a pink hue in places. Then I sprayed the area with Tide Stain release that I use for laundry spots and the lipstick is GONE :) Not even a pink hue remains! I’m going to use my rug machine in a minute to pull up the tide, but I can already tell the lipstick is completely removed from our carpet!

  3. My daughter just did the same thing. I didn’t have the products above, so I used Goof Off and a towel and scrubbed and scrubbed (it took two small bottles of the stuff) and then I used my Tide spot treater that I use for laundry and sprayed and scrubbed with just the edge of the bottle and the lipstick is completely gone! In five minutes I’m going to use my rug machine to pull up the spot treater, but I can already see all traces of the red lipstick are gone :)

  4. You could try Bissel’s new Stomp N Go…I wrote about it http://www.lifewithlisa.com/stomp-out-stains-with-bissell-stomp-n-go

  5. K2R Spot remover is excellent — sold at Ace or True Value Hardware Stores. Have used it on large black grease stains on carpet from a reclining love seat. Cannot even tell the black spots were there after using the K2R…. Haven’t tried it on lipstick though!

Thanks! I will try to get some today. I really don’t like steam cleaning so maybe that will work. I also have other spots that need to be worked on, so hopefully I can report back that K2R is a miracle cleaner ;) .

  6. Wish I had a handy tip to help you out :( Looks like you’ve done a great job. I would never have thought to use Goo Gone, great tip.
